Born in Idaho, raised in Indiana, educated in New York, a veteran of 30 years living in the
Caribbean and a traveler to five continents, Fred has learned to be curious and passionate about
the variety of environments and peoples that fuel his imagination in the art of image making.
He received academic training in studio art and art history at Columbia College in the City of New
York, The Glassell School of Art in Houston, Texas and Montgomery College in The Woodlands,
Texas and has studied with numerous national and international contemporary fine artists.
Nevertheless, Fred is essentially self-taught and continues an active program of self-education.
Fred paints in the representational tradition in a direct, alla prima style, preferably from life and on
location. He has painted in most of the states of the West and Southwestern United States, Mexico,
many islands of the Caribbean and, most recently, China. He is curious about many subjects so
paintings include portraits, figures, ‘scapes (landscapes, cityscapes, seascapes) and still life. Oil is
his primary medium, but his work also includes watercolor and acrylic. Sculpture is an additional
interest; his work is primarily terracotta with several pieces in bronze.
Recent exhibitions include Salon International 2009 at Greenhouse Gallery, San Antonio, Texas;
Plein Air Texas ’08 at Southwest Gallery, Dallas Texas; Nomadas del Arte 2007 at Sage Creek
Gallery, Santa Fe, New Mexico; Gallery 812, Denver Colorado: Houston Civic Arts Association
(China plein air paintings); Hispanic Society of Houston (Mexico plein air paintings); and
Greenhouse Gallery of Fine Art, San Antonio, Texas. International Artist magazine published one
of Fred’s paintings in its book, “How Did You Paint That? 100 Ways to Paint People & Figures,
Volume 2” .
Memberships include Oil Painters of America, Portrait Society of America, Outdoor Painters Society,
Plein Air Artists Colorado, the Woodlands Art League and the Houston Civic Arts Association
